Top Ten YA book covers Part 2

And I’m back 🙂

5. The Selection – Kiera Cass

The selection

Look at that dress! Beautiful! I love the colour and the use of the mirrors behind her. It is a brilliant cover!

4. Endure – Carrie Jones

I have loved all the covers but the close up on this one and the intricate design in the background gives it a little something more.

3. Matched  – Ally Condie

I fell in love with this cover from the get go and I’ve loved the rest of them too. They are beautiful, yet simple covers. That one image sets up the entire book. This is a great way of showing that less is sometimes definitely more.

2. Entwined – Heather Dixon

You may see a pattern occurring here but I’m obsessed with pretty covers. This dress is also to die for! You are going to pick it up and look at the dress and once the book is in your hands, you’re going to be hooked!

1.  Shatter Me – Tahereh Mafi

Shatter me

Wow! I have yet to read this book but I’ve bought it because the cover was so striking. I love the use of the trees for eyelashes. Every time I look at it I find something new around the eye.

So, that’s it. I hope by showing you some covers of books that I’ve had to buy because of the designs they will somehow trigger your interest.

I will be coming back here to reveal more details on my upcoming book so keep coming back and checking! 🙂

Top Ten YA book covers Part 1

Hi everyone,

I hope 2013 is being good to you all! I’m quite busy with the drafts of my two books that are coming out this year but I’m never too busy to read. It’s my second love after writing.  I plan on reading lots of books this year. So whilst I’m taking a break inbetween drafts I have been taking part in a book challenge and it has got me thinking about book covers.

I don’t care who you are or what you actually say, everyone judges a book by its cover 🙂 It is the same as judging people before we’ve really got to know them. We all do it, even just a little bit and we don’t want to admit it. I will put my hands up and say that at least 80% of the time I will read a book because the cover has enticed me first then the blurb will reel me in and make me want to read the book.

So, I have been thinking about covers and I’m going to share with you the book covers I absolutely love. Let me know if you would pick anything different… 🙂

10. Cirque Du Freak – Darren Shan

Cirque du freak

Darren Shan changed the original covers to these but I like both sets. The characters really come to life on the covers!

9. Emily the Strange

These books have always caught my attention, the black and reds are just so vibrant! Plus the moody girl makes me laugh!

8. Wither – Lauren DeStefano

Now if you read these books you can see the little clues on the front cover 🙂

7. Alice in Zombieland – Gena Showalter

Alice 1

The cover is perfect for the book. Nothing more I can say to that really. Just look at the fluffy dress! LOL, I’m a woman! Plus I love the quote ‘off with their heads’ 🙂

6. Skulduggery Pleasant – Derek Landy

Now I love all the book covers so I had to pick one. What I love about these covers is the use of colour, they are so eye catching and of course Skulduggery himself appearing on the covers makes it interesting. He is a rather strange skeleton 🙂

5 -1 to follow…

First Soul

Happy new year!

I’m looking forward to 2013! I have three books coming out, ones that I’m very excited about!

The second Pendle Hill book will be released later in the year, I know those of you that have read it are dying to read the second. Sorry, but you will have to wait 🙂 I also have a lovely Christmas book (I know, I mentioned the C word- sorry!) coming out during the holiday season 🙂 The book cover is already designed so towards the end of the year I will put this on amazon. The book will be FREE so you can enjoy this without the pennies disappearing! 🙂

For now, I’m revealing the title and design of the first book in the Soul Keeper trilogy. I can’t give too much away regarding the plot of this trilogy. I can say that it’s a story surrounding three friends who have a very important task to complete. I’m in the process of finishing the design of my book cover and I will reveal details and snippets in the coming months 🙂 But for now, I’ve played around with the title of my book and this is what I’ve come up with is this…

First Soul

The cover is amazingly vibrant and I can’t wait to share it with everyone! 🙂

For now, I hope everyone is well and they are enjoyign their start to a new year.

I’m looking forward to blogging and sharing things with you in 2013! 🙂

An interview with Clay Barnes

Keeley Smith: “Hi, Clay. Thanks for being here today.”
Clay: “Pleasure, thanks for having me.”
KS: “So, how do you like Millsteeple? I hear you’re a Yorkshire man at heart.”
C: “I like Millsteeple. I’ve had a few problems whilst I’ve been here that we are dealing with. But you’re right; I’m a Yorkshire man at heart. My home is in Ripon.”
KS: “Let’s get down to business, what is your ideal woman?”
C: (laughs) “I have a reputation for being a ladies’ man, I’m not, well, I’m not too much of a ladies’ man. But my ideal woman, well she would have to be strong willed, funny and down to earth.”
KS: “That could be any woman then?”
C: (grins) “I like to keep my options open.”
KS: “I suppose it makes it difficult to find women when you have such a huge secret to keep. I hear you’re a witch, is that true?”
C: “Come on, you believe in witches? It’s good to believe in that stuff for Halloween, it makes the night more interesting.”
KS: “So, the rumours aren’t true then? You could tell me, I can keep a secret.”
C: (Laughs) “If I told you I was, I’d have to kill you.”
KS: “Okay. Moving on, you look like you keep fit, do you work out?”
C: “Yes, I like to spar and play fight with my friends when we can.”
KS: “Interesting way to keep fit. Do you do anything else in your spare time?”
C: “I like to hang out with family and friends playing football and having BBQ’s.”
KS: “That sounds lovely. Okay, so I’m going to ask you some questions so the readers can get to know the real you a little better. What is your most treasured possession?”
C: “It is a locket my mother owned. I keep it when I need to think of her, she died a long time ago. ”
KS: “I’m sorry to hear that but at least you have something of hers. Okay, last question. Which person do you most admire?”
C: (His brows collide in the middle of his head.) “Someone I know had been through such a lot in her short life but she is still so strong, I admire that about her.

Hi lovely folks,

I hope those who have bought or downloaded my book are enjoying it 🙂 for those who haven’t bought it yet, according to the people already reading it, you’re missing out! 🙂

So, whilst I write, I listen to music.I know some writers can’t listen to music, it can distract, especially when a great song comes on and you just can’t help singing like a cat along with the person who can actually sing. I find that certain songs really get me in the zone and help my writing and my mood.  I’ve picked out certain songs, or a selection of songs because if I put all the songs on here this post would be very long.  For those who have read the book, you will be able to figure out where the songs fit. For those who haven’t read the book, don’t worry, the songs don’t give anything away. You will simply have that moment when you hear the song and read the book and think ‘oh, yeah.’

These songs appear in no particular order.

The first song on my list  helped me with certain scenes in the book, I will not go into details 🙂 It’s a beautiful song by Julia Stone and Angus.

Muse has been a favourite of mine since my husband introduced them to me some 10 years ago. I must admit I didnt like their music to begin with but I love them now 🙂

Two personal favourties which were played a lot during writing Returned were ‘Time is Running Out’ and ‘The Uprising’.

I love Christina Perri, her songs are just lush, a favourite of mine is Arms. This song was listened to the most during the middle of the book and at the end. It’s perfect for certain scenes.

Lastly, a playlist of mine is not complete without a little Ludovico Einaudi. His music is simply stunning.

I hope you enjoy listening to the above songs, they may just inspire you to write something 🙂

Until next time.

Also keep popping back, I have another competition lined up 🙂

Don’t forget you can still enter the competition at It closes on the 10th November.
